These sightings have sparked widespread curiosity and debate about their origins and purpose.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and law enforcement officials have assured the public that the drones do not seem to pose an immediate threat to safety. Nevertheless, local and state lawmakers are advocating for stricter regulations on the operation of unmanned aerial vehicles to address the unease these incidents have caused.

Federal agencies, including the FBI, are actively investigating the matter and have urged residents to share any videos, photographs, or information they may have about the drones.

Where Have the Drones Been Spotted?

Witnesses began reporting drone sightings in November, initially concentrated near the scenic Raritan River, which feeds into the Round Valley Reservoir—the largest aquifer in the state. However, sightings have since expanded to other areas, including near military facilities such as the Picatinny Arsenal and even over President-elect Donald Trump’s golf course in Bedminster. Coastal regions have also reported drone activity, further broadening the scope of the investigation.

A particularly concerning incident was reported by a Coast Guard official, who stated that a dozen drones appeared to shadow a lifeboat near Barnegat Light and Island Beach State Park over a weekend.

Are the Drones Dangerous?

While Governor Murphy has stated that the drones do not pose a danger, few details have been provided to support this claim. Assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia, who was briefed by the Department of Homeland Security, described the drones as being unusually large—up to six feet in diameter—and capable of flying without lights. Their sophisticated behavior, including evading detection by helicopters and radio equipment, suggests they are far more advanced than typical recreational drones.

Officials have also cautioned that some reports may involve misidentifications of helicopters or planes rather than drones.

Who Is Behind the Drone Activity?

The identity of those operating the drones remains a mystery. Investigators from the FBI, Homeland Security, and state police are working to determine whether the sightings involve a single drone or multiple devices being flown in coordination.

During a House Homeland Security Committee meeting, a senior FBI official expressed concern about the ongoing sightings, emphasizing the need to identify the individuals or groups responsible. Speculation has flourished online, with some fearing the drones could be linked to foreign entities. However, federal investigations have not uncovered any evidence to substantiate such claims.

Pentagon officials have reiterated that the drones are not of foreign origin and do not appear to pose a national security threat. Additionally, they have confirmed that the devices are not associated with U.S. military operations.

Regulations on Drone Use in New Jersey

New Jersey permits the use of drones for both recreational and commercial purposes, provided operators comply with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) rules and local regulations. All drone operators must also be certified by the FAA.

Sightings in Other Regions

Drone sightings have not been confined to New Jersey. Neighboring states such as New York and Pennsylvania have reported similar incidents. Overseas, small drones were detected near U.S. Air Force bases in England, raising additional concerns about their usage and oversight.

As investigations continue, authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any unusual aerial activity to assist in uncovering the truth behind these mysterious drones.

<ul
