Discerning God’s Timing: When to Wait and When to Move Forward
In the journey of faith, one of the most challenging aspects believers face is discerning between waiting on the Lord and knowing when it is time to take action. The Bible offers profound insights into this spiritual quandary, providing guidance on how to understand and follow God’s timing in our lives.
Understanding Waiting on the Lord
The concept of “waiting on the Lord” is a frequent theme in the Scriptures, emphasizing patience, trust, and dependence on God. Isaiah 40:31 tells us, “But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” This passage suggests that waiting on the Lord is not a passive state but a dynamic period of gaining new strength and preparation for what is to come.
Waiting on the Lord involves more than simply doing nothing; it is an active, intentional, and prayerful period of seeking God’s will. It’s a time for growth and reflection, allowing God to work on our character and prepare us for future actions.
Recognizing When to Move Forward

In Nehemiah 2:17-18, Nehemiah sees the devastation of Jerusalem and says, “You see the trouble we are in, how Jerusalem lies in ruins with its gates burned. Come, let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer suffer derision.” Nehemiah’s call to action was prompted by a clear need and was underpinned by prayer and confirmation from God.
Moving forward often requires courage and faith, stepping out into the unknown with the conviction that God has prepared the way and is leading us forward. It involves prayerful consideration but is marked by a sense of urgency and clarity that it is time to act.
How to Know the Difference
Discerning between waiting and acting can often feel daunting. Here are several biblical principles to help recognize God’s timing:

- Godly Counsel: Seeking advice from wise, spiritually mature individuals can provide outside perspective and help discern God’s direction (Proverbs 15:22).
- Peace: Colossians 3:15 says, “And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.” A sense of peace from God often accompanies the right decision, even if that decision is challenging.
- Circumstances: While circumstances alone should not dictate our decisions, God often uses our situations to point us in the right direction. Doors may open or close, guiding our steps according to His will.
Understanding whether to wait on the Lord or move forward requires a heart and mind attuned to God. It demands humility, patience, and a readiness to surrender our plans to His greater purpose. By grounding ourselves in prayer, Scripture, and wise counsel, and seeking His peace, we can navigate the complexities of timing with faith and confidence, assured that He leads us in every step.
